Ralph Stewart (American football)
Ralph Stewart (born December 10, 1925) is a former American football player and coach. He was a star player (center and linebacker) at the University of Missouri,〔"College Indians To Open Season On Saturday, Sept. 14 .", ''Southeast Weekly Bulletin'' (Sep 12, 1957), Vol. XXVI, No. 17, Page 1.〕 and played at center for the 1940s New York Yankees and Baltimore Colts football teams.〔"Ex-Colt Named Coach At South Dakota U.", ''Baltimore Sun'' (April 1, 1956), p. 5D.〕 After working as a line coach at Drake University,〔"Drake Assistant Coach Runs Against First Team", ''The Spencer Daily Reporter'' (September 23, 1953), p. 1.〕 he was named athletic director and head coach of the University of South Dakota football program in 1956.〔 Stewart later returned to the University of Missouri as director of intramural athletics.〔"Medical Group To Host Area Grid Mentors", ''The Nevada Herald'' (September 4, 1966), Vol. 75, No. 52, p. 1.〕〔"(Discuss Football Injuries )", ''Nevada Daily Mail'' (September 9, 1966), Vol. 83, No. 166, p. 1.〕 He earned three degrees from the University of Missouri (B.S., M.Ed., Ed.D) and served 20 years as chairman of its Physical Education Department before his retirement in 1991.
